tech editors are idiots
it's the end of the year and of course this means everyone is doing their stupid end of the year 2008 wrap ups best of this worst of that lists. and for some reason, a bunch of tech column writers have decided that the peek is awesome. in fact, it is so awesome that it is in the running for time magazine's gadget of the year. the peek, if you don't know, is a small handheld wireless device that lets you check your email. that's it. you can't surf the web. you can't talk to your friends. you can't text message. you can't even check your work email, just web-mail. it costs $100 to buy the device and about $20/m for service. i can see how you might think this is awesome, if it was oh, maybe 1998, about a year or so before blackberries came out. but these days my dog can get her email on her cell phone. so why would anyone buy this thing and why would people who are alleged technology pundits think this thing is so great?

I read a few of the reviews and don't get it either. They claim there are people that want email but don't want one of those crazy complicated smart phones. Its much easier to learn to handle two seperate devices with two different interfaces apparently.
Another argument they use is smart phones are too bulky, because it takes up a lot less space to put this and a phone in your pocket somehow?
They even throw out stats of the % of people that access their email remotely assuming that a smartphone is the reason they don't as opposed to, I dont know, they dont give a shit if they have to wait a few hours to see that hilarious FWD from their aunt.
Maybe I need to read some more reviews to figure it out I feel like I must be missing something or maybe this device is backed by some Stonecutters society that is pulling the strings...I think thats it.
